Mold vs. Mildew

Mildew is a type of mold . Both are growths caused by fungi, usually in damp areas or decomposing organic matter, and thrive in moist environments. Mold and mildew are generally a nuisance that people try to avoid in homes by keeping humidity and dampness down and eating or throwing out perishable food before it spoils. Both can cause respiratory illness.

Mold is a typically black or green fuzzy substance that appears on the surface of damp or decaying matter, especially organic matter, caused by fungus. Some types of mold are actually beneficial in food production.

Mildew is a typically white or grey powdery growth on the surface of plants, cloth, fibers, and organic matter caused by fungus. In severe cases of respiratory illness, mildew can actually grow in the lungs.
